RED CROSS TIPS TO PREPARE FOR SEVERE WEATHER

Know your area's weather risks.

Buy a Weather Safety Kit for emergency use.

Know your evacuation routes.

Identify where you could go if told to evacuate. Choose several places...a friend's home in another town, a motel or a shelter.

Choose a place for all family members to meet if you are separated.

Designate someone outside the area in which you live to act as a point of contact for your family members.

Know the meaning of WATCH and WARNING.

A Watch means severe weather is possible in your area.

A Warning means severe weather is already occurring or soon will occur in your area.

RED CROSS TIPS TO RESPOND TO A WEATHER EMERGENCY

Listen to local radio/TV stations.

When a WATCH is issued...
In a flood, move furniture and valuables to higher floors of your home.
In a tornado, go to a safe place to protect yourself from glass and other flying objects.

When a WARNING is issued...
Listen to local radio/TV stations for information and advice. If told to evacuate, do so immediately and take your disaster supplies kit.

Drive carefully. Keep your car fueled. If electricity is cut off, gas stations may not be able to operate pumps for days. If roads are closed, DO NOT go around roadblocks and DO NOT attempt to drive through flooded streets. Road closings are for your safety. If your car stalls in rapidly rising waters, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground.
